Admittedly, I have been getting a little “hippy/granola/crunchy” lately. Blame my vacation to San Diego (just kidding).
For a long time I subscribed to the “they say everything is bad for you so I’m not going to worry about it” camp, but the more I have started delving in and learning more about what goes into our food, the more “crunchy” I become. I have always considered myself a health conscious person, but I can honestly say that until I started the Whole 30 Challenge, I never read an ingredient list beyond calories, fat, etc. (and even if I had made it to the ingredients list, I wouldn’t have known what I was looking for). Unfortunately foods that are labeled “natural” are often far from it.
This got me thinking, if so many things have been added to my food, what could possibly be lurking in the products that I am using? After some quick research, it seems that the answer is quite a lot.
Am I going to throw out all of the products that I am currently using? No. Most of us (myself included) don’t have the luxury to drop hundreds of dollars to completely revamp their cosmetic supplies. On the flip side, it makes little sense that I am willing to drop money on certain things (*cough, clothes*) but not on things that go directly in or on my body. Luckily, as I had this epiphany, I was low on a few supplies such as deodorant and face wash so I made the commitment to trying to slowly phase more naturally made products into my rotation.
My first round of the beauty supply revamp included the following swaps (all purchased at the local Walmart – still trying to be frugal!):
I recognize that both Toms and Burts Bees are not the little “mom and pop” brands they purport to be (Toms is owned by Colgate and Burts Bees by Clorox) but the ingredients are at least improved from what I had been using. With more time and research, I will try to fully optimize my product inventory, but you have to start somewhere.
What products are you currently using? What small swaps have you made? Do you use regular products or tend to opt for the more natural? Share some of your faves!
